The Garden of Shukkei-en

Shukkei-en is a picturesque garden in the middle of the city of Hiroshima. The garden was initially built for Asano Nagaakira, a daimyo (feudal lord) and dates back to the 1620s. Most of the garden did not survive the atomic bomb that destroyed most of the city in 1945, but it served as a refuge for victims and to this day is a space of tranquil reflection and memorial.
